 Hi! It's Jen Beaudet aka Jennifer Beaudet Zondervan, J Beaudet, Jennifer Beaudet, Jennifer Lynn Beaudet, Jennifer Lynn Rutkoskie, J Beaudet Studios. Welcome to my new followers!

I've had a few names over the years but I'm still Jen...just Jen. If my name saga sounds old to you, imagine what it's like for me! It continues to pop up as a problem. Who knew another oil painter with the same exact name as me, would start showing up in 2018, after I had been selling on here for 10 years. I actually changed my name legally, to be different now. It doesn't seem to help. People get confused. I hope you know I've been painting and sharing my work since 2008 or even earlier if you count eBay. But, I started my Etsy shop JBeaudetStudios in 2009. If I sound like a broken record, it's just because I have painted a lot, and done so many commissions for you all, my name has been shared with my work around the world, all over the place and I just want you to know it's me...not the other person. 

New Floral Abstract

Ok, so if you're still with me, and not rolling your eyes...I have been up to some exciting things! I'm working as a full time artist again! And guess what? I'm selling more work than before. That's how it works. The more time and commitment the better the results. 

If you've been following me over the years, you may know I had some rocky roads. There was a time I was homeless, and thankfully my brother and friends, took me in. I had to make my way back into the world after being crushed by someone I trusted, and it took some time to heal. I can't say I've done it alone. I've had so much support from everyone. And...I must have done something nice to someone somewhere, because I was given a great gift to meet my loving, adorable husband. He is my greatest fan (maybe even more than my mom...). I'm so lucky! I'm proud to take his Dutch name, Zondervan. Soon, we will be traveling to his home in Holland! I can't wait! It's a dream come true! 

In the art world, I've been creating a new series of abstract florals, meeting new artists in town, showing my work in San Clemente, working on some art licensing deals, and more! 

Below is one of my first vintage woman paintings I did when I first started sharing my work. I think it was 2009. Julie from Being Ruby made my blog so beautiful and this was one of buttons. I have to say, I've messed up my blog since then...hoping to get it fixed but at least it's still here.

Next, is my latest floral abstract painting. I love this one! The colors are so dreamy! Speaking of dreams, this is how it came about. I actually had a dream of this painting. It was weird but I love how it came to life! Hopefully, another one will come to me tonight.

I'm working on a wedding commission now but look for more florals soon! 

I've done several wedding commissions over the years and love doing them! I am a little obsessed with weddings so it's a perfect match. I have one client who has commissioned about 10 for different couples. 

She knows some pretty well known people so my paintings hang in some pretty awesome homes! 

I wish I could tell you who, but I only know one. I do other commissions too. Many of places you've visited like this one below! I love the opportunity to paint a beautiful memory to be cherished forever.

I’m excited to share this new one with you all! It’s a 20x20 oil.

Sometimes things done come out how I want them to. That’s how life can be….however,  this wasn’t one of those days! I am so happy with this new oil painting and painting it was effortless. It was just me and my brush having fun. 

I’ve been working on staying focused this year and I think it’s starting to show.

Hey guys! I wanted to share this interview I did for Artpromotivate. 2013. It shares a little bit about my inspiration, education, and my process. I was going by Jennifer Beaudet then, because...well...that was my name. I have recently been trying separate myself from another oil painter with the same name. I would have used my middle name but she beat me to it! And it turns out we have the same middle name too! It's enough to make you crazy. It wouldn't bother me except her website comes up when I do a search for my name. All my paintings come up, but I'd kind of like this website to come up first since I've been at this since 2009. So...since I just got married in September 2020, I figured it's a good time for change. Previously, I had been signing my work J Beaudet, but from now on it will be J Beaudet Z. Hopefully you will not be confused. I'm still going by Jen Beaudet but now there's a Z at the end, for Zondervan...my new Dutch hubby.

Anyway, I'm so happy with my new name and hope this works to separate myself from the rest! After racking my brain, trying to come up with something that makes me different, I realized I'm a left-handed artist! Only 10% of the population is left handed, so I think that makes me kind of unique. It's funny, but losing my name felt like a loss of my identity! Like identity theft. It's a weird feeling. I had to search for who I am all over again. I was Jennifer Beaudet for 30 years and J Beaudet, the artist, since I was in college. The fact we share the same middle name is just unreal! Not that it matters, because you can't hear the pronunciation, but I say it "Boday" like Monet, she says Beaudet like "debt" (sorry, I couldn't think of another example). So how we differ is, I'm left handed and pronounce it Boday, I'm from California and I'm older....(by only 2 years, but still) Haha! So now, I'm moving on...New year, new name...

New florals blooming in my studio...

I have one more I finishing up today, then I think I may do another landscape. I'm currently working on getting my website again. I have always used this as my website and had my other one connected here, but blogger doesn't have as much control over SEO's as Wordpress does. You may have remembered I started a new one back in 2013 (I think that's when it was...time flies!) When my life was disrupted, and I was uprooted from my home in 2016, I neglected to pay the domain name renewal and lost it. I'm paying the price now, as it was sold to someone who is impersonating me. I've contacted the web site owners and servers to have them shut it down and may contact the local police. This is my business, and even more, my life. I take it very seriously. The strangest thing is the website has an email that goes to a woman in Maryland who has the same name as I do...even the same middle name! Crazy and it is she's also an oil painter, as of a year ago. I've spoken with her and she seems very nice. She has also sent an email to the register site demanding they take it down. Our art is quite different, and I'm pretty sure you can tell if it's an original "J. Beaudet", but I don't want there to be any confusion or uncertainty about who you're dealing with. I live in California and always have, she's lives in DC or Maryland (the east coast). I have never lived there and never will. I have been painting and selling my art on Etsy since 2009. I sell my work in my Etsy shop and sell prints on Fine Art America . I have also been accepted to Saatchi and I have my work on Artfinder   I've worked hard to get my name branded, and as you may know, I started this blog with that name "my life as a starving artist". While I may never have gone hungry, and I'm grateful for that, I do everything on a very tight budget (like mostly free...as in, I do it myself) I appreciate all of you who have bought my work over the years and allowed me to continue to create art. I can't do this without you! Seriously.
I am thinking about changing my name but not sure how that would be. I'm engaged and my last name could change when we're married. I don't think anyone will have his last name! Anyway, I'm still plugging along and Love that you are still with me! Thank you :)

Progress on New Sitting Lady Painting

Here's what's on my easel today. It's an 18x24; larger than what I've been doing lately. It feels good to work on a larger canvas! So freeing (is that a word?) 

I'm going to leave the background alone…well I'm going to try to at least. It's hard to resist overpainting, 

but I want this to have a raw feeling.  She still needs work on her arms as right now she looks armless. They are resting on the sofa, so you basically all you see are her shoulders. I think her hands will be on her head, but will be very vague. More work needed on her dress. This is my favorite part. I love painting folds in fabric, especially beautiful dresses like this one.

Here's the second in my new series of vintage inspired women. I used both a brush and palette knife for this modern impressionist painting. 30 Paintings in 30 Days!

I learned quite a bit from this challenge. As usual, I skipped around in subjects, sizes, medium, just about everything. I learned that I need to focus on one thing! I was using this challenge to explore acrylics and figured out how to

achieve the look of oils! I was also able to paint a few subjects that I had never painted before, like the waterlilies.

I'll still be using oils but am happy to have another

less expensive alternative.

Lazy Lavender Afternoon...

This painting is an 8x8 oil, on gallery wrapped canvas with painted sides, so it's ready to display! I tried to warm up the colors in this one so I used orange as a mother color. 

I also used a palette knife for most of it and an angled flat no. 6 brush here and there. 

I'm trying to discipline myself to paint at least one a day. These smaller canvases are 

perfect for that but I still need to work on larger ones too.

 So...we'll see if I can keep it up. I'm starting a commissioned piece right now 

with rich beautiful colors just in time for fall. After that trees:)

This just says Spring to me! I traveled down the mountain the other day and on my way back up, noticed a tree starting to blossom!

 I was so happy to see that and since then we've been enjoying beautiful weather and walks on the trails just about everyday. 

My puppy dog is sure happy too!

So these are my new abstracts. I've been wanting to venture in to the abstract world for a while now and have finally done just that. I'm hooked! I imagine the more I do, I will develop more of a signature style, but I'm just having fun completely freeing myself to discover new things. It's not as easy as thought it would be though. I had to completely paint over a few. I find it more challenging than

painting any real subject. It is so therapeutic though and I can't really put it into words. I reminded of my days in art class. So much inspiration and energy there!

If you have tried abstract painting yet, you definitely should! You just might like it!

I was planning on putting a piece in the local art cruise for this weekend but the paint is taking longer to try because of the weather. The theme was Absolutely Abstract. 

So I won't have any new pieces this month but you can still see two of my 

paintings in the Highland Art Center if you're in town!

I'm also having a very difficult time capturing the fresh colors of my paintings on "film". It's like this every winter and I have yet to splurge on some good lighting. I use the sun because it's free, but not always reliable! I just had one of my collector's inform me of how much better my paintings look in person. She went on about how absolutely beautiful it was when she received it. I really wish you could see them in person, but until then I need to work on getting a better representation of them online.

I have another piece I just completed of some more poppies! I'm thinking of Spring and they're so sunny! It's a smaller 8x8 impressionist style. I'll be taking some good photos

 of it tomorrow and posting soon!

Looking for Spring Blooms...

I can't wait for Spring so painted these to help. I used a palette knife for this one and realized I really like the texture and depth and that loose feeling I'm after. I'm working on a floral series all done with a knife. They are different sizes but all of beautiful flowers. Did I ever tell you I was a floral designer for a while? I love flowers! I only wish I could grow them! I'll never give up trying. 

If you've been following me through the years you know my daughter is away at college and that it was a very difficult time for me getting used to her not being around. I go through a mini empty nest every time she comes home for break then leaves again. Now she has a boyfriend and is even further away from me and so so busy. I know she's grown now but I still think of her as my little girl. 

This series I'm working on is a reflection of what I'm going through and I will call it Bloom, referring to my daughter blooming into the beautiful girl she has become and of her mother 

blooming into her new life. I'm still struggling with the later, trying to define what exactly that is, but I'm moving in the right direction. 

Waimea Abstract

Still continuing with a painting a day, I've completed a few more today and revisited my favorite place with this one. I think I might like this version more than my first. I will be retaking the photo and post it on Etsy or DPW tomorrow. Hopefully there will be a little more light. I'm trying to loosen things up and I find using acrylics can really help with that. I feel less committed to a painting and more free to try new things, because of the cost and the fact they dry so fast! I had forgotten how convenient acrylics are. As soon as I'm ready to take it off the easel to start another, it's dry! No messy wet paint all over. 

I'm starting to work on some abstracts and feeling a little out of my comfort zone. I sent photos of them to my daughter and am awaiting her opinion before I show everyone. I like them...but who knows what they really look like. It's a lot more difficult to go abstract then it looks. It's all about color harmony and design. But it can go bad fast! I had to completely paint over one that I did. I've been working fairly small to start but eventually (when I get some really big canvas) I plan on going large!

A little bit of Italy...

I love New Year's. It's a time for fresh starts and new plans. I can reflect on the past year and all it's joys and maybe think about what might make it a better year to come. I have lots of plans and am going full steam ahead! I welcome in this new year with open arms! Hello 2013!

I just finished this one for another workshop from Richard Robinson. I'm really enjoying doing his workshops and am learning new techniques! I also started using walnut oil instead of linseed oil. Walnut oil is non toxic so I love that! The workshop focused on little figures in landscapes being made with simple brush strokes. 

If you've ever been to Kauai you know how misty it can get over on the North side of the island. It doesn't matter whether it's rainy or sunny, though...it's always magical. 

I've been selling a few paintings and prints these last few weeks. I hope to keep up this momentum 

in the coming new year! 

For the new year I plan on keeping up with the workshops and

getting in some more galleries and boutiques, but I also want to get back to doing more paintings like I was doing when I started. Think more floral still lives with a whimsy feel (and more watercolors Vicki). I noticed I've been getting away from florals and whimsy feel. I guess the workshop and comparing my work to other's is what's happening and while it's good to improve my skills I don't want to lose my expressive touch, which is where I started. I'm working on another Venice, Italy piece right now and am conscious of this thought. I think it's looking a little Monet like. 

But you'll have to tell me what you think!

Still Life Study in Blue

I did this study for the weekly challenge on daily paint works. I haven't painted anything in over a week 

so I wanted to keep this one loose and spontaneous. I think I'll have to retake the photo because it was dark when I took this shoot. Actually it was dark all day. Dark and rainy. This painting shows the mood I've been in for the last few days. I've been feeling tired and achy, maybe fighting something off.
